After the Second World War, Istria was struggling with great poverty and deprivation. Local population had a hard time surviving, and they took on any kind of work to help feed their families. One of them was Luciano Lakošeljac. Luciano took truffle hunting seriously and started training his dogs and exploring the terrain. Training dogs to smell truffles usually takes two to three years, and then the hunt begins. Luciano’s obedient dogs Bizara and Pronto quickly learned to smell the striking scent of truffles and became excellent truffle hunters.
The distinctiveness of Istria makes an addition to its natural, social and cultural beauties as well as to the gastronomic offer which is also made of truffles, kings among mushrooms. Truffles are already a recognizable sign of Istrian gastronomy, an integral part of Istrian dining. Although unsightly in appearance and intense in smell, truffle offers an unforgettable experience for all senses. According to legend, it was a result of thunder being thrown at oaks by Jupiter, took a strong sexual energy from its creator and is now considered a powerful aphrodisiac.
It became a part of world’s gastronomy scene in 1815 when it was served on the Congress of Vienna; over time, Istria has proven to be the region that grows the largest, best quality truffles.
